Woman raped in subway between Dock Road and Melville Court in Chatham

A woman in her 20s has been attacked and raped.

The incident happened in a subway between Dock Road and Melville Court, Chatham, at about 2.40am.

Police cars and vans are currently parked in Dock Road while forensic officers search the site.

The area has been cordoned off.

The victim was approached by a man while walking home towards Brompton.

He is then reported to have assaulted and raped her.

Detective inspector James Derham of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "We believe this to be an isolated incident but understand the concern it may cause to members of the public.

"We are currently following a number of lines of inquiry to identify the person responsible and patrols will be increased in the area.

"We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of Dock Road from 1.30am onwards."

UPDATE: A man in his 30s has been arrested.
