08:00, 17 March 2014

Police are investigating after a young girl was caught on camera standing through the sunroof of a fast-moving car in Medway.

Passers-by were stunned to see the youngster's head and shoulders out the top of the Mercedes - travelling at 40mph on a busy main road in Gillingham.

Passenger Lucy Sheridan spotted the child standing out of the car on a dual-carriageway close to Medway police station and captured it on video.

The car was being driven along Pier Road on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police is making enquiries following a report that a child was looking out of a sunroof of a black Mercedes travelling on Pier Road A289.

"The incident was reported to police at 5.48pm on Sunday 16 March and was reported to have happened earlier the same day, at about 1.35pm."

Lucy, who said she thought it happened in Chatham, sent the picture to her Twitter followers at about 1.30pm.

She said: "Cannot believe what we witnessed in Chatham area... Kid with head out sun roof 40mph."
