Fire crews were called to a home after a person charring wood set a wooden extension alight.

Four fire engines were sent to the property in Ploughmans Way, Rainham, at around 10.30am today and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets and water from a hydrant to put the fire out.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Following this incident, firefighters are urging residents to keep controlled burning of any kind, whether it's a bonfire, fire pit or barbecue, well away from fences, greenery and property.

"It's also advisable to avoid having controlled fires in windy conditions, as this can cause it to spread rapidly."

It took firefighters around two hours to complete their work to deal with the blaze.
