Traffic built up on the M2 during rush-hour after a wooden pallet ended up on the carriageway near the Medway Services.
Police were called at 4.15pm and a rolling road block was put in place while the item was removed from the London-bound carriageway.
Although the item has been removed, there is still congestion on the motorway between junctions four for Chatham and five for Sittingbourne.
A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was initially called at 4.16pm to a report of a wooden pallet causing a hazard to road-users on the M2 London-bound near Junction 4.
"Officers attended and a rolling road block was in place while the item was removed from the carriageway."
