Firefighters were involved in a two-hour rescue operation last night (Thursday) at Fort Amherst.

A man, thought to be in his 20s, had been walking his dog with friends close to the Fort's moat when it escaped and ran under a fence at about 8pm.

Chasing the dog, the owner slipped down a steep embankment and into thick undergrowth in the moat.

Friends of the man called the fire and rescue service and two pumps from Medway went to the scene.

They were supported by a line rescue team from Deal who were on standby to offer advice and support if needed.

A firefighter from green watch, said: "The most difficult part of it was locating where he was.

"He had managed to pull himself up on one of the walls but it was very dificult to gain access."

Firefighters eventually managed to gain access to the moat through Maxwell Road.

He was passed to the care of paramedics who believed he had soft tissue damage to his arms and chest. It is believed he may also have suffered a broken wrist and was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for further examinations.
