From personal achievements to helping their friends, families and communities, young people from Medway have been awarded for making a difference.
The awards recognise young people who do their best, for themselves, their families or communities and three from Medway were honoured at the Kent Try Angle Awards.
Spirit of Try Angle finalists Madison Rowlands, 16, Rhys Hawley, 10, and Connie Povey, 15, joined 21 others from across the county at the final on Sunday, November 20, in Ashford.
The three were winners in their categories at the Medway awards earlier this year at the Central Theatre in Chatham when 195 10 to 18-year-olds recognised.
There are eight categories in the Try Angle awards covering personal achievements to acts of courage and positive intervention.
Madison was nominated by her teachers at Fort Pitt for achievement in sport, after she became the first Brit to win gold at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. She won the ski half pipe event at the games held in Norway, as well as picking up a bronze in the women’s ski slopestyle.
Rhys from Bligh Juniors won the good friends and young carers award for “acting beyond his years” and helping his older brother, Aidan, who suffers from cerebral palsy, with daily tasks.
The Robert Napier School’s drama group were nominated for the positive intervention award based on an educational video they had created, raising awareness of female genital mutilation. The group is Sam Bending, Luke Geary, Hal Spall, Tim Wraight, Abby Kramer, Dan Green and Caitlin Slaughter.
The piece was shown throughout the school and other schools in Medway, and is used by the police to give to organisations.
The Medway stage of the awards is organised by Medway Youth Parliament.
Chairman James Peck said: “The Try Angle Awards is always a fantastic event which allows young people to be recognised. It is always worthwhile to counteract the negative press that young people receive and share some of the fantastic stories here in Medway.”
