Gillingham have signed highly-rated Australian goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer on a season-long loan from Charlton Athletic.
The 22-year-old has yet to make a league appearance for the Addicks, limited to four appearances in the Football League Trophy and an FA Cup game in 2020, but is regarded as one for the future. Charlton say they have the option to recall the keeper during the loan.
He began his career for his hometown club Joondalup in Western Australia before moving to Charlton. Loan spells have come at Chelmsford, Hampton & Richmond, Dulwich Hamlet and Dover Athletic, playing four games for the Whites during their 2019/20 National League campaign.
Last season he was on loan with Scottish Premiership side Ross County, playing 17 times in the top-flight. Only injuries prevented him from making more appearances, breaking his nose in a 3-3 draw with Rangers in January before then dislocating a shoulder once he returned to training.
County boss Malky Mackay told the Press and Journal at the time: “It was a terrific save against Rangers that broke the nose. He came back from that, and in his first training session he dislocated his shoulder.
“It’s just one of these things. He has been terrific for us.”
He was part of the Australian Olympic squad for Tokyo 2020 and made his debut with the under-23s international side last year, playing against Romania and Mexico.
Gillingham have been without a goalkeeper since the departure of Aaron Chapman this summer along with loan goalie Pontus Dahlberg and youth keeper Tom Crump.
He becomes Gillingham's fifth signing of the summer transfer window.
