Gillingham striker Mikael Mandron turns his attention to Northampton Town in League 2 after Carabao Cup heroics against Brentford

Striker Mikael Mandron has put Tuesday night’s heroics behind him ahead of a tough weekend challenge - but the huge smile remains.
Mandron’s headed goal took the Carabao Cup tie against Brentford to penalties and he was one of those to score in the successful shootout. With five away goals to his name this term, he’ll now be looking for a first at Priestfield this season when they take on Northampton Town.
“It is done now for me,” said the striker when facing the press on Thursday. “Everyone is still talking about it, which makes sense, but for me it is done, I’ve trained and I am focused on Saturday.
“It was great night but that is done, the main focus is Northampton.
“I am definitely due one or two goals at home, hopefully it comes on Saturday.
“Hopefully we can take that confidence into the league, because if we can play with that intensity and that resilience then no doubt we will be winning games.
“We will see on Saturday but there is definitely a great feeling around the team and the club.”
Mandron got his head to a pinpoint Alex MacDonald cross to equalise against Brentford. It’s a moment he might be putting aside for now but one he’ll never forget.
“It might be the very best (goal I’ve scored),” he said. “Just for the context, against a Premier League team, late on, and also a game that caused an upset and playing against players who are going to the World Cup, that’s crazy!
"It was amazing, you could see how much it meant to us after the game when we went to celebrate with the fans, everyone was buzzing, everyone was dancing in the changing rooms, happy because it was amazing to be able to play against such a great team and to cause an upset the way we did.
“It was a great experience for the whole club, the players and fans and the families that came to watch us as well, amazing.”
Mandron’s family and friends enjoyed the moment just as much as he did.
“On the night I couldn’t stop smiling,” said the French striker. “I kept watching the goal back.
"What made me happy was when my friends and family called me. They are really supportive, they have followed me ever since I started playing, for them to see me score against Brentford meant a lot to them and that is what makes me happy.”
With a goal against AFC Fylde in the FA Cup last weekend it’s now two in two for the striker, who is keen for more.
“Let’s make it three in three,” he said. “I am always very confident, even when things go wrong, I believe that I can turn things around, but scoring goals does help (your confidence) and so do positive results.”
