Bonner has been out of work for five months, after leaving Cambridge United in League 1, having won promotion from the division below in 2021.
Members of the Gillingham Supporters’ Club have had their say.
GFCSC chairman Neil Klee said: “I am very pleased with this appointment; it looks to me that Mark Bonner has the credentials to get a promotion to League 1.
“Cambridge supporters think we’ve got a winner.”
Anthony Weeks said: “Mark Bonner wasn't my first choice, but he got promotion from League 2 before (he had Paul Mullin in his side which helped) and so hopefully will do the same with us if we sign a decent striker!
“Other than that, I don’t know much else about him, but will back him of course!”
David Garth, media officer of the supporters' club, said: “I must admit, Mark Bonner would not have been my first choice, but I was pleased that the appointment was made quickly.
“He does seem to be very personable from his initial interview, which is encouraging, and I note that he is referred to as a manager rather than a head coach, so I hope this means he will have the final say on all player signings as he has indicated from his interview.”
Sean Spillett described it as a “great appointment” saying: “He has League Two experience and success with Cambridge United in 2021 and they were leading goal scorers, which we have lacked the last few seasons, and he likes to play attacking football.
“He also has the knowledge of the players in the leagues and hopefully will add to our squad and make us a contender next season.”
Alex Pooley said: “I'm very happy with this appointment and also how swift the club have acted to get in a replacement for Stephen Clemence.
“Mark speaks extremely well from just his first interview and that's left me feeling very excited for what Mark Bonner's Gillingham can do!”
