His best save of the night was to deny Josh Davison - leaving the Charlton man with his head in his hands after scrambling across his goal to push a near-post shot away.

Gills boss Steve Evans, who has Aaron Chapman competing for a starting berth alongside Cumming, said: “Chelsea think the world of him.

“I had conversations with the senior people there including the gaffer and he had a plethora of options in League 1.

“When I spoke to Jamie I reminded him that when I was at Rotherham I signed Emiliano Martínez from Arsenal and at the time I said, ‘this boy will go for multi millions if he ever leaves Arsenal’ and I wasn’t wrong was I? [The Argentine signed for Aston Villa in 2020 for a deal worth a reported £20m].

“Jamie Cumming is a proper keeper. He is still learning, he is still young, he is still to have that filling out process in his body but is a top goalkeeper and he has a top goalkeeper chasing him.

“Every time Aaron Chapman plays he gets a clean sheet and that gets forgotten and that is frustrating for him but they are the best of buddies off the pitch and a real rivalry. Jamie wants the shirt and Aaron wants a chance.

“With that save in the second half, I said to him, I always watch goalkeepers when they have to get across their box and make a save at the opposite post, he has probably got four or five good steps in and those are hard to get.

“He is paid to make important saves and he’s done that.”
