The Shouting Men: Gillingham defender Max Ehmer writes exclusively for the KM Group

When we start right we are a very good team. We haven’t been doing that in the last couple of games and we have been working on that.

Against Walsall, we were the better team but we didn’t start brightly enough and the other day (against Bury), we didn’t start anywhere near bright enough, which is why we are not picking up so many results.

It wasn’t good enough at Bury but these things do happen. We need to just pick ourselves up now.

I ended up playing centre midfield during the first half. I played a couple of games there early on in the season, which I enjoyed. Wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I will happily play.

I love playing at the back but it was nice to get a little run-out there in midfield. We were 2-0 down at the time but I just tried my best.

Early on in the second half I had to make a goalline clearance. I stayed in the middle and it hit me straight in the face, my nose and mouth.

My eyes were watering for a couple of minutes afterwards because he did hit it hard but I would do anything to keep us in the game – 3-0 would have been a killer, game over, but at 2-0 there was always a chance.

As a defender you enjoy making those blocks, like John Terry, it’s who everyone tries to copy and that is your job, to defend the goal, defend as a team.

We got a goal back after that but we didn’t have enough to break them down to score a second. We had the late penalty shout, even Tomas Holy had a chance but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Despite the way we started the game, we still almost got something from the match. We keep going to the end and we have scored some late goals this season, including mine versus Peterborough. We will never accept defeat.

I loved scoring that goal against Peterborough, a last-minute equaliser. I remember it was Conor Wilkinson who flicked it on and before I chested it down, I thought ‘if my touch is good enough I am in’ and then all I have to worry about is hitting the target.

With the conditions, I just wanted to hit the target. There is nothing worse than hitting it wide. I hit the target and scored.
