Conan Whitehead caused a major upset last week at the BDO World Professional Championships.

The Gillingham bricklayer was eliminated at the quarter-final stage by two-time champion Scott Waites – but not before defeating last year’s finalist Mark McGeeney.

‘The Barbarian’ stunned the No.1 seed in front of a packed Lakeside crowd, winning 4-0, a victory that topped anything he had done before.

“It’s the best win I’ve ever had in darts and it shows where my game is at the moment,” said the 32-year-old.

“I am very happy with the way my darts is going.

“I wasn’t too worried ahead of the game because he wasn’t in great form. I knew I could beat him, but never did I think it would be 4-0.

"It was unexpected and unbelievable. I’m in the form of my life.”

Whitehead will hope to maintain that form for the UK Q-School qualifiers, which begin in Wigan on Wednesday and last for four days.

During the event players have the chance to win one of 30 places on the PDC tour for the next two years.

He said: “I am confident, I reckon I will do it.”
