Striker Ben Williamson could be the answer for the Gills following Cody McDonald’s injury.

Twenty-six-year-old Williamson is on loan at League 2 Cambridge where he has scored three goals in five appearances.

The Gills are a striker short after McDonald broke a bone in his foot during the 3-0 win at Millwall.

Boss Justin Edinburgh believes Williamson’s time at Cambridge should help reinvigorate a player who signed in the summer from Port Vale.

Edinburgh said: “That loan has served its purpose.

“Cambridge got a player that has created and scored goals, Willo has got game-time and confidence from goals and we have got a player who is now high on confidence.

“We need to explore it and that is one player I feel we haven’t see the best of here. Maybe he will get his chance.”

Williamson’s loan at Cambridge expires on January 3.

Edinburgh’s options increase in January when the transfer window reopens but he’s wary on unsettling a team who sit third in League 1 as they approach the midway point of the season.

“We always want to strengthen but it won’t be someone just coming in for the sake of it,” said the manager.

“It has to be someone who will better us and that will fit into the dynamics of the group.

“There is great chemistry here. It is easy to say we want to strengthen and bring a couple in but I have to be mindful of what we are bringing in because what we have here is going well. We have to make sure that whoever comes in does not upset that chemistry.

“You want to get it right. Recruitment is one of your biggest things of what you do as a manager. If you don’t get your recruitment right you will be struggling from the off. What you don’t want to be is be chopping and changing.”

The Gills are hoping to extend the loans of both Jordan Houghton and Deji Oshilaja. Both expire on January 3.

“We are hopeful on both,” said the Gills boss.
