Jordan Green has dropped four levels in seek of a new challenge following his departure from Gillingham.
The winger has joined Isthmian South East side Ramsgate in a move which their chairman Richard Lawson has described as “possibly the best signing the club has ever made.”
Green, 28, has previously played professionally with Barnsley but the Gills picked him up last summer from Dulwich Hamlet, determined to make the most of another chance in the Football League.
Early signs were good after a promising pre-season and a goal for the Gills at Wimbledon in the EFL Cup. He made 19 league appearances for the club but fell out of favour in December.
The last time he was involved for the Gills was as an unused substitute at Sutton. Manager Neil Harris later confirmed the midfielder had played his last game for him at the club and he was released this summer.
Rams manager Ben Smith said: “As soon as we knew he was available we had to do all we could to make it happen.
“The signing will surprise a few people and certainly it sets a marker down of what we want to do this year.”
Green said: “The fan base at the club is big and I’m looking forward to exciting people.”
Another player on the Gillingham released list this summer, Bailey Akehurst, has also found a new club.
He’ll be lining up for Isthmian Premier Hastings United next season, a club he previously spent time with on loan.
Akehurst’s new club have former Gills youth boss Craig Stone there as player-assistant manager. Stone said: “Bailey is a player I’ve worked with for around three years and helped bring him in on loan last season.
“A player that I’ve always thought highly of both as a person and as a player, a modern day full-back that can do both sides of the game and that the fans will love.”
Akehurst, 19, came through Gills’ youth set-up and played five league games for the club.
