Gillingham forward Tom Eaves encouraged by second-half display against Bury

Striker Tom Eaves believes Saturday’s point against Bury was another step in the right direction.

The draw lifted Gillingham up to 21st in the League 1 table until AFC Wimbledon drew with Peterborough the following day.

“It was a hard-fought point,” said Eaves. “They had a few good spells in the first half but we changed the formation and felt that worked well for us.

“We dominated second half for large spells and ultimately we were disappointed not to get the win.

“It is a great point for us though and hopefully we can snowball on now. It is another game we haven’t been beaten.

“We are going in the right direction and the second half performance showed it.

“It was a bit ugly, a bit scrappy, but we got a point, we didn’t get beat and now we have to go to Walsall (next Saturday) and put on a performance.

“We don’t want to be in that drop zone but we just have to keep performing and results will go our way.”

The Gills were a different team in the second half against Bury, fighting back from a goal down – scored by fellow Scouser and one of Eaves’ former team-mates at Bolton, Neil Danns – to pick up a point.

Gills’ seven-goal frontman found himself playing alongside fellow 6ft-plus striker Conor Wilkinson after the break.

He said: “Second half we showed a lot of energy, put them on the back foot quite a bit, it was a lot more promising second half.

“Conor Wilkinson did well when he came on, we had really good spells and were unlucky not to get the victory.

“It takes the load off me (playing with Wilkinson) and lets me take a chance a bit more in behind and play on the shoulder a bit more.

“We changed it, it worked for us and we stretched the play really well. We are happy with the point, a bit disappointed not to win.”
