Manager Justin Edinburgh has no fears about Gillingham’s fitness despite an energy-sapping weekend.

The Gills battled to a goalless draw at big-spending league leaders Bristol City on Saturday and take to the road again on Tuesday.

Edinburgh’s in-form side will be looking to keep their play-off hopes alive with a result at fellow hopefuls Chesterfield.

“What has been taken out of them has been put back in with the performance itself and the result,” said Edinburgh. “We will be buoyed by that.

“We worked hard but this group have got energy. As much as it has taken it out of them, the clean sheet and a very valuable point would have certainly refuelled the body.

“It is always difficult with back to back away games, certainly travelling the distance we have, but we will recover properly now and get them ready for Tuesday. We will look forward to it.

“We are in good form, people are fighting competitively for that shirt and they want to keep it. Long may that continue.”

Gillingham remain unbeaten on the road since Edinburgh’s arrival, taking points off Peterborough, Yeovil, Swindon and City.

He’ll be keen to keep that run going against a Chesterfield side who, like the Gills, are outsiders to gatecrash the top six in League 1.

Edinburgh said: “We have only had one defeat in 12 now and that is a fantastic achievement, that shows our consistency.

“We are unbeaten away from home since I have been here. That is a fantastic record and it took everything we had to maintain that (on Saturday).

“We are in very good form and we won’t underestimate ourselves. We went (to Bristol City) believing we could achieve something and we did that.”
