Gills manager Justin Edinburgh is contemplating a move for a loan striker.
An ankle injury to ever-present front-man Luke Norris will keep him out for three months.
Fellow striker Cody McDonald is still working his way back to full fitness following his own injury.
With the Gills struggling to hit top form in recent weeks, Edinburgh is exploring options elsewhere.
He said: “It is something we may have to look at in the coming days, whether we can go and find the right personnel to bring in on loan.
“Luke was pivotal and it is something we haven’t now got. Cody can give us that but he is not quite fit.”
McDonald, who also missed most of pre-season through injury, returned on Saturday off the bench.
“Cody wasn’t fit enough to start and we knew we only had 15-20 minutes in him,” said the manager.
“I asked if he could give me longer and that’s the type of character he is but he was suffering afterwards.”
Norris had started every league game this season but landed awkwardly after a challenge against Crewe last weekend.
Scans last week revealed that the damage is serious.
“It is going to be months rather than weeks and we have missed him immensely," said the manager.
