Justin Edinburgh is already working on transfer targets for next season.

The Gillingham boss wants to steal a march on rival clubs by lining up new recruits early. He has also decided who he wants to keep at Priestfield.

Edinburgh, whose side host Fleetwood in League 1 on Good Friday, 3pm, said: “We’ve got targets. We’ve had meetings among the staff here over potential signings.

“We’ve made contact with ones that we want. You’ve got to be ahead of the game because the good ones will be wanted by other clubs.

“You haven’t got to rush but you’ve got to be on your toes and be ready to go.”

Edinburgh feels he has been in the job long enough to decide who will be staying at Gills next season, with several players out of contract.

But with the club still harbouring play-off ambitions, Edinburgh isn’t about to rock the boat.

He said: “I know who I want to keep. I’ve had a fair amount of games now. There may be some where my mind isn’t completely made up.

“Some may force their way in but I’m pretty sure I know who I want.

“We’ve got a lot to play for still, we have to be mindful of that and be careful in deciding when we tell the players.”
