John Egan isn’t getting over excited about the League 1 table.
The Gills are back on top and two points clear after winning at Crewe but the stand-in skipper said: “It is great to be top of the league. It’s every footballer’s objective and if it isn’t then I don’t know why they would be playing the game.
“We’ve had 13 games and nothing is won after 13 games. It doesn’t matter where you are in the table.
“We will keep plugging away and doing our thing. We are taking it game by game and we’ll be trying to win again against Scunthorpe on Tuesday,”
Victory at Crewe was all the better for Egan after the defender helped Gills bag a first clean sheet in over a month.
“It looked like the game had got away from us,” he said. “We had some good chances in the last half-hour and we didn’t take them.
“We were maybe thinking we would hold out for the draw and take that but to get three points was massive.
“Hopefully it will be huge come the end of the season."
