Former Gills defender Connor Essam has left Crawley Town after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Essam left the Gills in January 2013 after failing to win a place in former manager Martin Allen’s side.

Crawley signed the central defender, who was a product of Gills’ academy, on a free transfer.

Under former boss Andy Hessenthaler he had made 18 appearances. During the 2011/12 he also helped Dartford win promotion to the Conference.

Essam had started the 2012/13 season on loan at Luton before Crawley signed him.
Last season Essam made just three appearances for the club and spent another spell on loan at Dartford.

His is now a free agent and can move to any club even when the transfer window closes on Monday.

Crawley chief executive Michael Dunford said: “Connor is going to further his career elsewhere and we would like to thank him for his services to Crawley Town and wish him all the best for the future.”
