Practice paid off for Gillingham at Portsmouth, according to defender Connor Ogilvie.

The Gills were beaten 3-0 on their last away outing, at Oxford.

There was a determination not to repeat that on their visit to Fratton Park on Saturday and centre-half Ogilvie was key to making that happen.

“All over the pitch everyone was switched on,” said the former Spurs youngster.

“We have worked very hard since the Oxford game to try and sharpen up, stay solid and not concede many goals and it has worked.

“Hopefully we can push on and get some results now.

“We dug deep and everyone could see the passion from the boys, to get the point.

“You could see the determination out there. Things didn’t go our way the other end but we’ll take the point.”

The Gills conceded plenty of possession in the match and were playing on the break.

Chances were limited, however. Portsmouth hit the woodwork once but Gills created little going the other way.

Ogilvie said: “When you work so hard defensively, when you do get up there you have to show composure and take your chances, but it is difficult sometimes.

“We were doing things mostly on the counter attack and sometimes things don’t go your way.”

Back in the side was Jack Tucker, taking over at right-back.

“Jack hasn’t put a foot out of place and he has put himself right in the mix for next week,” Ogilvie said.

Tucker himself thanked the fans who attended.

He tweeted: “Hard earned point today away from home, well deserved clean sheet! Away support unreal again.”
