Gillingham boss Neil Harris knows a new man in charge at Wolves makes things even tougher for his team in the Carabao Cup.

Spaniard Julen Lopetegui’s first competitive game in charge of the Premier League side will come on Tuesday when the Gills head to Molineux for a fourth round cup match.

Lopetegui has taken over a team sitting bottom of the Premier League table and hopes to turn things around as top-flight football returns following the World Cup break. He’s had a month to get to know his new team - after replacing sacked coach Bruno Lage - and Harris has been doing his best to try and work out what kind of set-up his team will be facing.

Harris said: “As we have done a couple of times this year already teams have changed managers before playing us, you don’t always have a clear indication of what a new manager is going to do, or what personnel he is going to pick, but we have been fortunate enough to have watched footage of a couple of their recent games, their friendly matches.

“That has been handy but sometimes the unknown is not a problem, we will be set-up, well-drilled as we have been with a mindset and a defensive shape and then it will be about tinkering on the evening from the side of the pitch if we need to and adjust our shape to try and compete.

“They will dominate the ball and there is going to be an excitement around Molineux because of the new manager and so we have to deal with that new manager bounce and we have to deal with a Premier League football team and try and get a shape and organisation about us, every bit as good as we did against Brentford (in the last round).”

Wolves welcomed back their Portuguese players from the World Cup as well as South Korean international Hee Chan Hwang.

They recently played La Liga side Cadiz in a friendly, winning 4-3 - a encouraging boost for a side who are the second lowest scorers in the top 92 clubs in England behind the Gills. Prior to that they played Empoli and had a training ground game against Birmingham City.

Wolves will be red-hot favourites on Tuesday but Lopetegui knows his team can’t be complacent against a Gills side who knocked Brentford out in the previous round on penalties.

“I am excited for this, I want it a lot,” said the former Spanish national coach. “At the same time, we have to be ready because it’s a very important match.

“We have to be ready because these kinds of matches are very dangerous, always, for all of the teams, and of course it’s our first step and our first match at Molineux, so we have to be ready.”

Gillingham will hope to have captain Stuart O’Keefe back available while Robbie McKenzie is also looking to make a return. Haji Mnoga is unavailable as he is cup-tied.

Striker Joe Gbode, meanwhile, is back with the youth team having recently had a taste of first team football.

Harris said: “Joe won’t be involved with the first team at the moment, I have said all along that players will only be involved in the first team if they deserve the right and the privilege to train with me, Joe will be with the youth team at present.”
