Top-flight teams not involved in European competitions entered at the second-round stage but the Gills will be taking on League 1 Exeter City at Priestfield.

Exeter thrashed Cheltenham 7-0 on Tuesday night in the opening round, a record away win for the Grecians. That win came after a 4-0 home victory over Port Vale in the league at the weekend. They finished second in League 2 last season to secure their place in the third tier.

Gills manager Neil Harris said he didn’t mind who he got as long as it was at home. The match is due to be played on the week commencing August 22.

Harris’ men progressed to the second round after beating AFC Wimbledon 2-0 on Tuesday thanks to late goals from Mikael Mandron and Jordan Green.

Last season’s run in the competition ended at the second-round stage, losing on penalties to Cheltenham.

Exeter last made the journey to Priestfield in November 2020, returning home 3-2 winners in the FA Cup. They won by the same scoreline the previous time they were in town, up against the Gills in a League 2 match in November 2012.
