Gillingham manager Neil Harris is leaving the door open for former Millwall player Scott Malone.
The left-sided 32-year-old has trained with the Gills since the start of pre-season and went with them on tour to Como. He wasn’t involved against Millwall at the weekend - a side who released him this summer - but was there at the game.
Harris said: “He’s helped us massively with numbers and quality and leadership in the group while we’re still recruiting.
“Scott is a player we really like, a top player, but he is attracting a lot of interest from Championship clubs.
“Scott came to Como with us and rightly so, brilliant for him and great for us, but it wasn’t right for him to be involved against his old team.
“Moving forward, just watch this space. There’s no pressure on Scottie with us.
“The door is open for him to train with us and play with us.
“At the moment it suits us, it might suit him, but it has to be a joint decision between Scott and myself about what happens, every 48 hours really. As long as it benefits both parties then I am really open minded.”
Gillingham, meanwhile, have been linked with a winger over the weekend that played Premier League football for Liverpool.
Cardiff City’s Sheyi Ojo was a kid in demand while emerging from the youth ranks at MK Dons and it was the Reds who won the race for his signature, beating off competition from the likes of Chelsea and other teams in Europe for a winger that was an England youth international – reportedly paying £2m.
Ojo, 26, managed a handful of appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League and had loan moves into the Championship to play for the likes of Wolves, Fulham and Millwall. He’s also played in France for Reims and with Rangers in Scotland.
He played under Gills boss Neil Harris at Cardiff City and that’s where he remains but reports over the weekend suggest that he could be on the move this summer.
Harris has made it clear he wants a winger and Saturday’s game against Millwall showed they are still lacking some sparkle up top. Ojo could be one to light the place up.
Ojo made 40 appearances for Cardiff last season and even if he’s available, the Gills could still find wages a stumbling block for a player who has been at the top end of the game for a decade.
