Goalkeeper Glenn Morris scooped the top prize at Gillingham’s end of season awards ceremony on Sunday night.
American owners Brad and Shannon Galinson appeared on a video link to present the player-of-the-year award to 39-year-old goalie Morris, who has recently signed an extension to his deal at the club.
The player-of-the-year award was voted for by the supporters. Alex MacDonald was runner-up while Shaun Williams took third place.
MacDonald overcame injury to play more games than anyone this season, clocking up 54 appearances so far. The club are in discussions over a new deal.
Williams has already agreed new terms and is currently undergoing treatment on a knee injury that has kept him out for the last few weeks of the season, which required a minor operation.
Morris joined the Gills on loan just before the season began, to replace Charlton’s injured goalie Ashley Manard-Brewer, and the move was made permanent in January. He said: “I have really enjoyed it, it’s a great club, the boys have been brilliant all year and it’s been a great experience for me personally over the whole season. I’ve enjoyed every moment.
“The first half of the season was tough but I look back on that fondly because we dug in and managed to stay in there and the second half we managed to produce the goods. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable. I’m looking forward to next season now.”
Young player-of-the-year was Dom Jefferies who said he had appreciated the opportunity to show what he could do at the Gills. The Welshman joined last summer from Brentford.
There was also an award for Joe Gbode, the young striker who will be playing professionally for the club next season. He said he was “very supportive and appreciative of the love and advice” from the team and club’s coaches.
Goal-of-the-season went to Cheye Alexander for his volleyed effort against his former club Wimbledon in February - his shot from outside the box won the game.
“I do them in training every week!” he said, adding: “It was good to get it against Wimbledon as well.”
Manager Neil Harris thanked fans for their loyalty in what has been a tough season, boosted midway through following the Galinson takeover and a new-look team since January.
He said: “I knew our fate rested on investment and credit to Paul Scally and Paul Fisher for squeezing (the deal) through before the transfer window.
He thanked Kenny Jackett (director of football) and Andy Hessenthaler (head of recruitment) for their “unbelievable support” along with the US owners.
“We don’t want to stand still,” he added. “We want more. What we have done in the last three months has been miraculous but we don’t want to celebrate staying in the division.
“We are here to take Gillingham up the divisions.”
Club stalwart Dave Boniface was presented with the Elliott Scally Cup for Special Achievement and spoke of the buzz he gets serving the club, which he has done over 27 years.
The event was held at the club’s Great Hall at Priestfield, the first time the event had returned to the venue with supporters since 2019, following Covid restrictions and a low-key event after last season’s relegation in 2022.
