22:00, 26 September 2017

Interim boss Peter Taylor was satisfied with their draw against Scunthorpe but knows there is room for improvement.

Tuesday night’s game, which was the first since the departure of head coach Ady Pennock, finished goalless.

Taylor watched from the stands as the Gills kept it tight against a side who look set to be in the promotion mix this seaon.

He said: “The performance could have been better but there were still a lot of positives.

“The work that the players put in to get a result was all I could have asked for. We are very pleased with that.

“I am sure there are lots of things we can get better at, but if you look at Scunthorpe’s season and our season, it was a very difficult fixture and the players worked extremely hard to get a point. I thought we looked quite solid, which was encouraging.”

Taylor had asked for a response following a poor performance at the weekend, which cost Pennock his job.

“We got that 100% from everyone,” he said.

“We started very well and the Luke O’Neill injury hurt us a little, because we had to change shape. We had to change it on the strength of what we had on the bench when Luke came off.

“I felt that messed us up a bit, then we didn’t have good spells at times, but they dug in and at times it looked as though we could get a goal.”

For the second game running the Gills failed to test the opposition keeper but Taylor knew they were up against it due to the loss of both big men upfront. Conor Wilkinson was injured and Tom Eaves suspended.

He said: “I don’t think we had enough possession and I don’t think we have enough targets. I felt that we needed at least one big centre forward to help us.

“I said to the players, there was no Tom Eaves and no Conor, so we had to try and play better football. They have a good excuse when those two are playing upfront because they can knock it forward. They had to be a bit more caring.

“Scunthorpe are not going to give you much time to get the ball down and we had to be patient.”
