Gillingham have completed the permanent signing of former Newcastle United keeper Jake Turner.
The 23-year-old was released by Newcastle this summer and moves to the Gills to compete with Charlton loanee Ashley Maynard-Brewer for the no.1 shirt.
Turner spent part of last season on loan at Colchester United, making his debut for them against the Gills in the Football League Trophy. He went onto play nine league games for the League 2 side.
The former England youth international started his career with Bolton Wanderers but never played a senior match for them, gaining experience on loan at Frickley Athletic, Stalybridge Celtic and Darlington.
Three years ago he signed for Newcastle but again found his first-team chances limited and went out on loan to get some football, playing at Morecambe during the 2021/21 season. He played 14 times for them in League 2.
Turner, who stands at 6ft 4inch, did play for Newcastle in the Football League Trophy, making two appearances for them against Macclesfield and Port Vale.
He’s the sixth signing of the summer transfer window for boss Neil Harris and could make an appearance against Folkestone Invicta in a friendly match this Saturday.
