Gillingham Women have landed themselves an exciting fourth round FA Women’s Cup match against Arsenal next weekend.
The Gills beat Cheltenham Town in their third round match on Sunday to earn their place in the next round and a game against top-flight woman’s team Arsenal.
Gillingham - who operate independently from the men’s EFL team - will travel to Meadow Park, Boreham Wood this Sunday (April 18) to play the FA Women’s Super League side. The Gunners are currently third place in the table. Arsenal Women are the most successful side in Women’s FA Cup history.
A 2-1 extra-time win over Cheltenham on Sunday sent FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division side Gillingham through to the next round,
Sunday’s match was played at Cheltenham Town’s Whaddon Road and the hosts took a 64th minute lead in the game but nine minutes later midfielder Jade Keogh levelled for the Kent side with a shot from distance.
No further goals were scored in normal time and the match was won by Gillingham in the 112th minute thanks a goal from Otesha Charles.
Manager Josh Oatham: “I am overwhelmed with pride. We have gone behind with 20 minutes to go and to win 2-1, I have said before this is a special group but I think everybody could see what I was talking about, it is not just my belief, the players fully believe it. I am just really excited for the future.
“Arsenal is great, it’s fantastic, but it is about the building blocks for next season. We know the challenge (against Arsenal) is going to be massive but we will give it a go. We will try and do Kent proud.
“I have enjoyed seeing the group of players gain in confidence, we have a very talented group as well as a confident group and I am looking forward to our next step.
“This group is forming its own identity, it is a resilient group and a group that never gives up, I am immensely proud to manage them.”
