Gillingham have postponed Saturday’s game against Crewe Alexandra after a Covid outbreak.
The Gills announced earlier that the stadium had been closed and people sent home after several office staff tested positive.
A record 78,610 new Covid cases were reported in the UK on Wednesday - the highest daily number since the pandemic began and the football schedule is beginning to be impacted too.
The Gills have now confirmed a number of players have tested positive for the virus.
A statement said: “We informed the EFL that the club would be unable to fulfil the fixture at MEMS Priestfield Stadium due to a number of positive Covid-19 cases in the squad.
“In light of the increased transmission rate of the Omicron variant, the EFL will now review the circumstances surrounding the postponement.
“In addition it will assist affected clubs throughout this challenging period to help them mitigate against the risk of infection amongst players and staff, while ensuring their obligations to the EFL regulations are maintained.”
A rearranged date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.
Games at Bolton, Lincoln and Sheffield Wednesday are also off in League 1.
