Gillingham Women are looking for a new manager after Josh Oatham’s decision to stand aside.
Oatham announced his departure prior to Sunday’s game, his 60th in charge over three seasons. In a statement the club said they were saddened with his decision and praised him for keeping the side going during a difficult period.
Oatham said leaving was his toughest decision he has made in football.
He said: “I thank Kevin (Hake), our chairman, for his understanding and support in my decision. The decision has been made for non-footballing reasons and I now feel the time is right to step back as the club has successfully transitioned into a new era.
“I am extremely proud of what we have achieved together in my time in charge of the cub and will reflect on our journey together as one of great success.
“I am sad to leave behind a talented group of players and staff but with us sitting in mid table, and having played all but one game away from home this year, I am confident that in the second half of the season the team can make the Bauvill a fortress and have a successful season and achieve their goals.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me during my time at the club and I look forward to cheering the team on as a fan for the remainder of the season.”
Oatham’s record at Gillingham was 31 wins from those 60 games in charge while also keeping the team going following their split with Gillingham Football Club during the Covid pandemic.
He remained at the helm following a takeover in October.
A statement from Gills Women said: “It is with sadness we have accepted Josh’s resignation. He was a big part of sustaining the team’s position within the league and it’s testament to Josh’s ability that he led the team to their highest ever finish last season.
“Reluctantly, Josh has decided to take a break from footballing activities, to now concentrate on his own business.”
In his final game, Gillingham Women lost 2-0 to Bridgwater United at the Bauvill Stadium on Sunday in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.
While the club look for Oatham’s replacement, this Sunday Gillingham are away to AFC Wimbledon in the FA Women’s Cup third round.
The Gillingham statement added: “The club will not be rushed into an immediate replacement and if necessary, an interim will be put in place until the right candidate becomes available.”
The club have welcomed applicants for the role and CVs can be emailed to info@gillinghamwomenfc.co.uk
