Winger Nathan Thomas has joined the Gills on loan for the season.
The 24-year-old arrives at Gillingham from Sheffield United following two loans spells in League 2 during the previous campaign.
He started last season at Notts County and then switched to Carlisle United in January.
Carlisle were keen to have Thomas back next season and there was plenty of interest elsewhere in League 1 but the manager Steve Evans has won the chase, making it his eighth signing of the summer.
Thomas started his career with Newcastle United and then switched to Sunderland, where he completed his youth career.
He went onto play for Plymouth, Motherwell, Mansfield and Hartlepool, where he found regular football, before moving to Sheffield United in 2017.
His time on the pitch with the Blades has been limited to just three first team appearances.
He scored for United in a 3-2 EFL Cup win over Walsall and came off the bench in a Championship game against Norwich City.
His only other appearance came in the FA Cup, but he made his mark, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town. A loan spell at Shrewsbury followed and he came up against the Gills in League 1.
Thomas was booked in the game against the Gills, which ended 1-1.
