Gillingham will be in the hat for the Capital One Cup second round draw – alongside Manchester United.
The Gills could pull a dream draw as Premier League clubs not in Europe enter at the second round stage.
A nightmare campaign for the Red Devils last season leaves them in the unusual position of facing a second round match in the League Cup.
The draw takes place on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports, after the first round match between Coventry City and Cardiff City.
A seeded draw means the Gills will face higher league opposition, with the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Stoke City.
Clubs exempt from the draw and entering at the third round stage are Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Hull, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Peter Taylor’s Gillingham made it through to the second round after beating Yeovil Town 2-1, thanks to goals from Brennan Dickenson and Aaron Morris.
Last season the Gills were beaten 2-0 by Bristol City but the year before they beat the same opponents to earn a tie against Middlesbrough, which they lost 2-0.
First round defeats to Brighton and Norwich had preceded that but in 2009 the Gills made it through to round two, where they met Blackburn Rovers. Mark Stimson’s side lost 3-1.
Peter Taylor’s last spell with the Gills saw his team knocked out by Bolton Wanderers.
The next round takes place week commencing August 25.
