Gillingham will find out who they face in round two of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Saturday.

The competition remains regionalised until the final at Wembley on Sunday, March 22.

Eight southern sides were handed byes through to round two and they will be joined by the winners from round one, including the Gills.

A first half penalty from Luke Norris was enough for Peter Taylor’s side to see off League 2 Stevenage on Tuesday night.

Joining them in the next round are AFC Wimbledon, who had Gills loan defender Adam Barrett to thank for keeping their hopes alive.

Barrett scored a stunner from 20 yards in the last minute of normal time to send their tie against Southend to penalties. His team then won the shoot-out.

The second round draw will take place on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM show on Saturday morning.

There are 16 teams in the southern section of the second round draw. Teams remain divided into East and West.

Bristol City, Exeter City, Northampton Town, Plymouth Argyle, Colchester United, Dagenham & Redbridge, Luton Town and Milton Keynes Dons all received byes in round one.

They are joined by the Gills, Coventry City, Newport or Swindon, Portsmouth, Cheltenham, Crawley, Leyton Orient and AFC Wimbledon.

The next round is played week commencing October 6. Gillingham could play one of either AFC Wimbledon, Colchester, Crawley, Dagenham, Leyton Orient, Luton or MK Dons in the South East section.
