Gillingham offer the cheapest matchday experience in League 1.

The BBC Price of Football study looked at the costs of attending matches at home and abroad.

Visiting Priestfield is certainly competitive, compared to the rest of the clubs in the Football League, with the cheapest “matchday experience” for an adult costing £20.80.

That includes a £12 ticket for the Brian Moore Stand - £2 cheaper if bought in advance – a pie, a cup of tea and a matchday programme.

Gillingham’s £12 admission price is for the uncovered ‘Town End’ but nobody else can match it, with a £15 ticket at Bolton the next best.

An adult away ticket, for visiting fans, is also the best value in the division, available at just £10.

But at £3.80 Gillingham’s pies are the second costliest in the division, with Coventry’s the only one to cost more, at a whopping £4.

The club have, however, frozen the price for their pies from last year, when they worked out as the dearest in the division.

But apart from pies, the Gills can claim to offer good value.

Gillingham recently unveiled a £25 family ticket, in the Brian Moore Stand, for two adults and two under-18s.

Chairman Paul Scally said: “Community clubs like Gillingham are the heart and soul of football, the backbone of the English game.

“We are working hard to dispel the idea that professional football is a sport only accessible by watching television.”

The Gills have also been offering free tickets to schools and universities for recent home games, in a bid to drive up attendances, with 2,700 handed out for the match against Coventry.

Gills’ average league attendance so far this season is 6,178, down slightly from last season’s figure of 6,316.

Gillingham’s cheapest season ticket is £285 – about average for League 1 – but nobody can beat Bradford’s £149 ticket, which has produced big attendances at Valley Parade. Over 18,000 watched their match last weekend against Rochdale.

Merchandise is below average for the division at Gillingham, with junior shirts costing £27 (£32.06 average) and adults £40 (£42.52).

In the National League, Dover’s cheapest day out is £21.20 – 40p more than Gillingham – while a matchday experience at Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium comes in at £22.30, again more expensive than their League 1 rivals.
