Gillingham boss Steve Evans has revealed the club has made an offer to sign a higher-league striker.

The Gills expect to find out on Monday whether their bid has been accepted for the unnamed forward.

Brandon Hanlan and on-loan Mikael Ndjoli are the only senior strikers currently at Priestfield.

“We’ve got one bid on the table for a striker, thank you to the chairman,” said Evans.

“Whether that gets accepted we will know on Monday. I don’t think we’ve bought a player as a football club for a little while.

“We’re trying to do something positive and we’re trying to do one or two other players as well – I think four in total we’re trying to do.

“I’ll be absolutely delighted if we get the four of them because we’d be significantly stronger.

“We’re trying really hard. Our chairman lost a lot of his holiday last week with his family which is precious to him, he lost a lot of that (time) by having to do calls and emails on behalf of us so I’m grateful for that.”

While the cash offer is not going to break the bank, it is a firm indication of the support Gillingham chairman Paul Scally is willing to give his new manager in the transfer market this summer.

However, even if the bid is accepted, there is no guarantee that the player will make the switch to Priestfield.

“We’re not talking hundreds of thousands,” added Evans. “It’s an offer that we think where we see this player at this moment in time with some incentives if we do really well and he does really well.

“We don’t know if it will be accepted, their chief executive has taken the offer and is going to discuss it with his board.

“When you’re a striker and you’re half-handy, you’ll always have options. The kid may decide to stay where he is.”

Evans also confirmed that he wants to bring in an additional forward – one of four potential new faces.

“We’ve got two or three options that we’re looking at defensively on the left side, I don’t think that’s a secret,” said Evans.

“We’re looking further forward on the left and we’re certainly looking up top – not just the one striker, we’d like to bring in a couple.”
