Gillingham will tonight be out to earn another cup victory to give the club a much-needed lift.

The Gills host non-league Dagenham at Priestfield in a televised FA Cup Second Round replay, with Premier League outfit Leicester awaiting the victors in early January.

Sitting second-bottom in League 2, it’s been a miserable league campaign so far for the Gills.

But Neil Harris’ men have fared much better in the cups and will visit Wolves, another Premier League outfit, in the Carabao Cup on December 20.

Coming into the match after a 3-0 league loss at the weekend to Salford, Gillingham’s boss will need to pick his troops up and has hinted he’ll make changes for the tie.

Harris said: “I have had to do it quite a lot so I’m getting used to it, to be honest!

“I won’t forget personnel making mistakes, I can’t forget that, and I won’t forget the manner of the second half [against Salford].

“I have to try and learn all the time, and try to be better all the time.

“But it’s the FA Cup. The league takes a breather until Bradford [on Sunday] and it’s FA Cup on Thursday and, ultimately, it’s all that matters.

“People were given an opportunity on Saturday. I have changed the team again and I suppose I’ll have to change the team again after a 3-0 defeat.

“It’ll be a good game against Dagenham. They got beaten at home on Saturday [1-0 by Torquay] and the prize that awaits in the next round is exciting for everybody.

“We need a lift at the football club. Every time we have had Carabao Cup success, we have had a little lift, and we need that again with a performance and a result against Dagenham.”

The Gills narrowly avoided an upset at Dagenham as Scott Kashket’s injury-time equaliser earned a draw after Josh Walker had given the National League hosts the lead.

Harris said: “The first game showed there was nothing between the teams.

“We were two very evenly-matched teams that could affect both ends of the pitch against each other and Thursday will be no different.

“I didn’t want a replay but we have got it and it’s just about winning a game of football. We will be trying to do that.”

If the replay is level after 90 minutes, the match will go to extra-time and penalties. The winners will pocket £67,000 in prize money.

There’s an unusual schedule to the week, with Gills’ game against Salford having started at lunchtime last Saturday, a slightly earlier kick-off time for their FA Cup replay of 7.15pm and their weekend encounter against play-off occupants Bradford is now a 1pm kick-off on Sunday.

Harris explained: “It hadn’t changed anything going into Saturday. It changes the week ahead for us because the answer always [after a defeat] is ‘Oh, come in and run, work harder’ but it’s not about that. It’s about preparing the players for the next game.

“So it’s about making sure the players get the right recuperation and preparation time for the next one and the one after that. It’s just planning, really.”
