Gillingham are eyeing a lucrative second round draw in the Capital One Cup.

A 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle puts them in the hat for round two of the Football League competition.

Round one winners will be joined by the 12 Premier League sides who aren't competing in Europe this season.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton and West Ham will all be excluded from the second round.

But the Gills could be in line to face a team such as Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle, Stoke or Sunderland in the seeded draw.

Goals from Bradley Dack and Jake Hessenthaler led Gills to a 2-1 win at Plymouth on Tuesday night, coming from a goal down.

Gills boss Justin Edinburgh hopes victory from their long midweek trip will reap rewards.

He said: “We would like one of the big ones at home, financially and with the coverage you get, it is always nice but you get what you’re dealt with.

“It is great to be in the draw and I’m looking forward to it.

“If you get the right draw you could get the TV thinking it may be a potential upset and you get coverage, good revenue and it can help you along the way in the season.”

Edinburgh won the League Cup in 1999 for Tottenham, as they beat Leicester City 1-0 at Wembley, a match which saw the Gills boss sent-off.

He said: “I have had good success in the competition and every competition we enter, whether it’s this one, the JPT or the Kent Senior Cup, you’ve just got to enter them to win it and that’s what we will be doing.”

The second round draw takes place on Thursday, August 13, live on Sky sports 5 and Sky Sports News, following the Doncaster versus Leeds United first round match.

Gillingham are ball number seven of the unseeded teams.

Possible opponents (and ball number) for the Gills are: Bournemouth (1), Aston Villa (2), Birmingham (3), Cardiff (4), Charlton (5), Crystal Palace (6), Everton (7), Fulham (8), Hull City (9), Ipswich (10), Leicester (11), Middlesbrough (12), Newcastle (13), Norwich (14), QPR (15), Reading (16), Sheffield Wed (17), Stoke (18), Sunderland (19), Swansea (20), Watford (21), West Brom (22), Wolves (23), Brighton (24).
