Forward Elliott List says Gillingham not lacking in motivation for New Year's Day clash with Southend

Elliott List is hoping Gillingham put right a few wrongs on New Year’s Day.

The Gills let themselves down on Saturday, losing 3-1 to Doncaster on home soil.

Next up is a game at mid-table Southend and the chance to avenge a 4-0 thumping on their last visit to Roots Hall.

“I was on the bench that game,” List recalled, as he looked ahead to the League 1 clash.

“It wasn’t a great game to watch, we all know that.

“We want to go there and put that right, and put Saturday right as well. We will go there and give it our best shot.

“We know we are capable of it, if we apply ourselves correctly, Saturday was disappointing but we move on.”

Gillingham were undone by their own mistakes against Doncaster.

List said: “A few of the goals we gave away killed us off a bit.

“We gave it our all in the last 10-15 minutes but it wasn’t meant to be.

“Everyone was deflated, everyone was down, we know it wasn’t great, especially having just beaten the top of the league team.

“But all we can do now is focus on our next game now, which is Southend on Tuesday and approach it in the correct way.”

The win over league leaders Portsmouth came on Boxing Day but the Gills couldn’t build on that.

List said: “All the boys were confident, why wouldn’t you be?

“We had just beaten a top-of-the-league side, with a clean sheet, we went into it with all the optimism in the world.

“It happens in football sometimes, things go wrong, people make mistakes, people don’t mean to make mistakes.

“You can’t train for mistakes, it happens, it is all about giving your all and bouncing back as much as you can.”

The Gills did pull one goal back and List was heavily involved, crossing for Tom Eaves, whose header against the bar was turned in by Callum Reilly with two minutes left.

He said: “Second half I isolated the right-back, I just kept getting at him and that is where we got the goal from.

“The goal came quite late and had it come sooner it might have been a bit better.”
