Gillingham are looking into the possibility of extending John Marquis’ loan.

The four-man caretaker coaching team have indicated to chairman Paul Scally of their desire to see the Millwall striker stay on, possibly until the end of the season.

For that to happen, an agreement will need to be in place before the current transfer window closes, on Monday, February 2.

Marquis is currently on a deal that expires on February 7. If a long-term agreement can’t be made then the Gills could still hold onto the 22-year-old forward for a maximum of 93 days.

With three goals in three games, including a quick-fire double in the home win over Oldham, Marquis has made an instant impression at Priestfield.

Coach Andy Hessenthaler said: “The fans have seen what he can do and he has been brilliant for us.

“We need that type of player with a never say die attitude. That is the culture of the football club.

“He has been terrific. It (his deal) runs out on the 7, so that is in the hands of the chairman. He asked the opinion of the four of us and it’s a no brainer.”

If the Gills retain the player on a month-to-month option then the deal would expire in early April.

Defender Max Ehmer has a contract that also runs out on February 7 and it is likely that the Gills will be seeking an extension on his loan from QPR.

“We have had a conversation (with the chairman) and Max has done well for us,” said Hessenthaler.

Gillingham’s third loanee, West Brom left-back Bradley Garmston, is with the Gills for a month and that agreement expires on February 14.

Discussions over an extension to his loan have yet to be had. Garmston initially came in as cover for injured Joe Martin but he is now fit again, having come through Monday’s Kent Senior Cup game unscathed.

The January transfer window closes on Monday at 11pm but reopens shortly afterwards for loan moves and deals involving players not under contract.
