Forward Danny Haynes is training with the Gills as he hunts for a new club.

The 27-year-old counts Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic among his former teams but has been a free agent since December after being released by Notts County.

Haynes was reported to have been County’s top earner but his time there was cut short, after agreeing to leave six months before his contract was due to expire.

Gillingham, under a caretaker management team, offered Haynes the chance to train with them.

One of Gills’ coaches Steve Lovell knows the player well and was happy to help.

“He is here training, trying to keep himself fit,” said former Wales striker Lovell.

“We can’t do anything and he realised that. He doesn’t want to play any games because it might stop him from going somewhere else.

“He is happy to come and train and if we are still here, or a new manager comes in, then they might fancy him and he could play in a behind closed doors game.

“I was at Charlton with him and he did well there. He is decent, a good lad and trains hard.”

Haynes was a cult figure at Ipswich, scoring in several derby matches against rivals Norwich, before leaving for Bristol City.

Stints at Barnsley and Charlton followed before signing for Notts County in July 2013. He made 23 appearances for them, scoring three goals, while also spending time on loan at Hibernian and Crewe.
