Boss Justin Edinburgh was delighted with the condition Gillingham players reported back in this week.
The first team squad had fitness testing on Monday and Tuesday before a double-session at the training ground on Wednesday.
Gillingham’s players were met with 30 degree heat at Beechings Cross but there wasn’t a lot of excess weight that needed burning off.
Edinburgh said: “For the player and ourselves, it is always good to get out on the grass. It is where the business end is done.
“Conditions were scorching and we had to take that into account but I am delighted with the shape the players have come back in. It is pleasing to be back.
"It is the players’ responsibility to look after themselves and it proves how serious they are about being successful here at Gillingham.
“Those questions have been easily answered by the players because they have come back in a fantastic condition.
“Their testing over the last few days has been excellent and it is important.
“It is totally different to my day when you used pre-season to get yourself fit. I am delighted with the attitude they have shown to keep themselves in good condition.”
