Jermaine McGlashan felt he had a point to prove on Thursday night.

The winger produced a couple of great performances from the bench in the previous two matches and that earned him a start against Bristol City.

In the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie he showed that he is more than just a super-sub.

He said: “I went into the game wanting to show that I could do it from the off.

“I saw Hessy’s comments about whether I could last (the 90 minutes) and I understand what he was saying. For a pacey player like me it takes a lot of energy but I felt like I had a point to prove.

“It was important for me to show I could do it from the start and be effective."

McGlashan was a threat for much of the match and scored the equalising goal.

“I didn’t quite make it to the end but I wasn’t complaining about going off at that point.

“I was tired and I gave it everything I had.

“When you haven’t started for a few games it does catch up with you. I was getting a bit of cramp towards the end but I was enjoying it.

“The more I start the easier it will be to get through games.

"I was buzzing to get that goal and then I had a chance afterwards (in the second half) but it was a good save from the keeper."

The Gills drew on the night but lost the area final tie 5-3 on aggregate.

It meant mixed feelings for McGlashan.

“The positives to take are that we didn’t lose on the night,” he said.

“I am a little frustrated because i felt maybe I could have got another goal. In the first half Lofty had a good chance so it is a bittersweet moment but we have to take the positives.

“It is our third game unbeaten so it is progress but we have lost the tie. Some of the boys are a little bit down but that is only natural.”
