Justin Edinburgh’s special day couldn’t have got much better,

The former Tottenham player led his team out at Priestfield for the first time and engineered a thrilling win against title-chasing MK Dons.

Edinburgh described himself as “immensely proud,” after witnessing Gills’ latest win.

He said: “MK Dons are a fantastic side, who have been in the top positions all season, and for us to come away with a 4-2 victory is a fantastic result and a very good performance.

“We had to be aggressive in our approach, in terms of closing down, pressing and playing off the front foot.

“The energy levels of these players is staggering because they did it from start to finish and never allowed MK Dons to get a foothold in the game, or play with any fluency.

“Testament to the players for the way they conducted themselves, with the way we set up to play against MK. We spoke about it on Friday and they certainly delivered.”

The Gills were ahead after just nine minutes when Cody McDonald stroked home a free-kick with Doug Loft and Bradley Dack playing a supporting role to set him up.

“I can’t take any credit, that is imagination from the players,” said the manager.

“I think that is being good players and that is what I am working with here, players who have that bit of magic and Cody certainly produced that.”

MK Dons twice levelled the scores, to cancel out McDonald’s opener and Bradley Dack’s strike before the break.

The second goal came from the penalty spot after Gavin Hoyte brought Carl Baker down in the box.

Edinburgh has no argument with that decision.

He said: “I did think it was a penalty.

“It looked like the MK Dons players got there first, which was confirmed by Gavin Hoyte in the dressing room.”

Despite the set-back two goals in the final 15 minutes finally finished the visitors off.

“That was a top performance against a very good side and we will be very pleased with our work and the points,” said the former Newport boss.

“We can enjoy the weekend and get back to work on Monday and have a full week of training without any distractions of a (midweek) game.”
