Justin Edinburgh hailed the collective team effort that helped down Wigan at Priestfield on Saturday.

A double from man-of-the-moment Bradley Dack ensured he grabbed the headlines once again but the Gills boss was keen to highlight the group as a whole.

“It was a complete team performance,” said the winning manager.

“I am sure Bradley Dack is going to get the headlines after dispatching the two goals he did but we had no passengers and we haven’t had that so far this season.

“We have a great spirit here. They are a young group and right now they have a real desire to better themselves. Rather than talk about the individual, I think it was a real good collective performance.”

It was Dack who helped get the Gills going, firing in a shot to test the Wigan keeper with less than a minute gone.

Edinburgh said: “We knew we wanted to start fast. We had a fantastic performance here on the first day of the season.

“Since then we travelled and travelled a long way in the first two weeks and to get back and then replicate that same kind of performance with a result was good.

“We knew that Wigan were buoyed by a really good performance and result in midweek at Scunthorpe and we knew they were better than their results had shown.

“We saw a lot of DVDs from them and knew we would be in for a game where they would possible have more possession than us. We had a game plan and the boys carried it out fantastically.”

Dack’s 37 minute strike put the Gills one up but in the second half it took a great save from Stuart Nelson to keep the lead intact.

“He made a good save and that is what Stuart is doing at the moment,” said Edinburgh.

“He made a fantastic save at Bradford in midweek and another one here, but that is what we expect of him, a keeper of that stature and experience. That is what we are looking for.

“Prior to that we had a lot of chances and that would have been their only chance of note. We had some real good chances.”

Dack sealed the win with a second half penalty.

Edinburgh said: “We deserved a clean sheet because of the effort and the work rate we put in. It was a pleasing day all round.”
