Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence on how he expects to have the final say on transfers

Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence has said he will have the final say on transfer signings.
The Gills have a team behind the scenes working hard to try and bring in additional quality, hoping to improve the club’s chances of promotion this season. Clemence insists any new arrivals must be given his seal of approval first.
Gills’ head coach Clemence has experienced colleagues to pick out potential targets, with director of football Kenny Jackett, head of recruitment Andy Hessenthaler and recruitment consultant Selim Gaygusuz working overtime to try and identify players who could make a difference.
“It is a team effort,” said Clemence, when describing the club’s recruitment set-up.
“We speak all the time and we are speaking quite a lot at the moment. We have spoken a lot since I have come to the club. January is not an easy window to deal in, not as easy as the summer, but the recruitment department bring me players all of the time and we look over them together.
“I obviously don’t get to watch them live, but we have Kenny, Hess and Selim who are out there watching players all the time, then we come to a decision.
“There is differing opinions at times but what I will say is that anyone who does come in has to be with my say so, I have been told that since I came to the club, that is how we are working.
“We have very good people here with lots of experience, and it was something that attracted me to this club, with lots of management games between Kenny and Hess and Selim has been around for a little while as well. It is something I have to tap in to, hopefully we can do something in the coming weeks.
“Talks are on going all of the time with the owners and the recruitment department and myself.
“I have said a few times that we will only look to bring players in that I believe will improve the team. I don’t want squad fillers, we have a very good squad and to get players that we need isn’t always easy at this time of year. We will be looking for quality over quantity.”
