Medway Rugby Club’s girls’ section brought their annual summer tour to their back gardens.
The Covid-19 outbreak ended the season early for the girls and their annual summer tour to Worthing for a weekend of rugby was also cancelled.
The Medway girls’ section - which before the season was ended prematurely had grown to over 85 players - had been looking forward to visiting the West Sussex seaside town along with around 1,000 other rugby players. It would have capped their best season off nicely.
Historically, Medway have enjoyed their weekend tours, usually consisting of fancy dress, kangaroo courts, dancing, singing and of course some rugby.
Medway wanted to do something special to bring there season to an end and keep spirits high. The idea was to replicate some of their weekend tour from their back gardens.
Two hundred girls and family members joined in across over 50 families. Scattered across Deal, Sheppey, Canterbury, Sittingbourne, Medway right over to Bristol.
Youth chairman Matt Kuhn said: “The whole girls’ section came together and had a fabulous fun time together whilst apart.
“The format was simple, every player had to set up a camp in their back garden with their families, complete with camp name.
“Amazingly a local company, Absen Rope Access Specialists, sponsored the girls and paid for their tour tops.
“All players had to wear their tour tops, their Medway shorts and socks. A decorated toilet roll called Wilson (from the film Castaway) had to be at their sides at all times as part of the tour rules.
“Through a combination of WhatsApp and Zoom the whole of Medway girls section was connected for a day and night of fun activities and challenges. These included guess the baby photo, a boat race, quizzes, a TikTok talent show, Kangaroo Court and an evening disco.
“Some highlights of the day were the TikTok dances, and the kangaroo court fines resulting in a number of people pretending to spitfires in their streets and three guilty parents whose sentence was to twerk their next door neighbours cars. All in the spirit of good fun and being part of a rugby family.”
