Josh Wright turned down MLS move to sign deal with League 1 Gillingham

The lure of Major League Soccer wasn’t enough to tempt Josh Wright away from Gillingham.

The midfielder signed a deal last Friday which ties him to the Gills for the remainder of the season.

He had previously featured in all of Gillingham’s opening games this season on a
non-contract basis.

Wright said: “There were a few clubs sniffing but nothing turning my head away from here and I am over the moon that I have signed. Hopefully, I can kick on even more now.

“The MLS is something that has cropped up a few times. I know a few people out there and the offer more-or-less came in.

“I had an opportunity to go out there in the summer and did last January as well. I have played it down every time.

“If I wasn’t at a club, or maybe somewhere else, America might have been something I could have done but there was no getting me away from here.

“Since I have been here, I have enjoyed it and felt good about myself and there is still more to come as well. There was nowhere else I wanted to be than at Gillingham.”

Wright was a late summer addition to the Gills squad, his arrival as a free agent coming to help fill the gaps left by a number of pre-season injuries.

But his consistent form led to Justin Edinburgh handing him a permanent deal.
