Gillingham’s Boxing Day opponents have filed a report of alleged racist language aimed at one of their players.
The game against Colchester United at Priestfield was halted for several minutes as the match referee took down a statement from one of the visiting players, understood to be Junior Tchamadeu. The incident occurred before he scored what turned out to be the winning goal of the basement scrap in League 2.
Tchamadeu celebrated his goal infront of the Rainham End and cupped his ears towards the home fans.
A statement from the visiting club said: “It (racist language) was heard during the first half of the game at Gillingham, and immediately reported to the referee and fourth official.
“Following the game, statements were taken, and Colchester United will work with Gillingham FC and Kent Police as they investigate.
“No person, in football or in our wider society, should have to be subjected to this discrimination.”
Fans are urged to report any discrimination they see or hear at stadiums to the nearest steward or via the Kick It Out Reporting App.
Gillingham released their own statement, which said: “The club is aware of an alleged racist comment that was made during the League 2 fixture against Colchester United at Priestfield Stadium on Boxing Day.
“We will conduct our own internal investigation, work alongside the necessary parties and, if required, take appropriate action.
“There is no place for such behaviour in the game and it will not be tolerated at Gillingham Football Club.”
