It’s cup final time for Invicta Dynamos and a chance for the current crop to write their name into the history books.

Coach Karl Lennon’s already been there and done it and now gets the chance to lead a side to cup glory in the club’s 25th anniversary season.

Lennon said: “It is massive, it is what the history of the club has been about, getting to finals, opportunities like this.

“The players have worked fantastically across the season to get ourselves into this position, we are there deservedly. It is a great opportunity for them to put their name in this club’s history and ultimately, it is them, they have to do it.

“I will prepare them as best I can and come game night on Saturday and Sunday they need to be completely focused with the right energy to win a trophy. They can do it, there is no question that they can do it, but it is now the proof point, we have to stop talking and start doing.

“I can’t wait because I think it’s great that the club is back in the final and looking forward to a packed arena, home and away, and that can only bring the best out of the players.”

The Dynamos have the upper-hand over the Chiefs with four wins from four in the league - but Lennon certainly won’t be complacent against a side who recently beat league champions Streatham - a team who won 11-2 in Gillingham on Sunday.

“Chelmsford would have taken a lot of confidence from that and rightly so,” Lennon said.

“They have talent in the team to cause us problems. I am quite happy and confident leading into the game, but I know that they have threats and on their day they can perform.

“We will have to be at our best but that’s like any cup final. I played quite a few for the club in the past, the best team didn’t always win, it was the team that was prepared to go that extra mile sometimes or teams that get the lucky bounce. Uncontrollable things can happen, the referee can make a decision that doesn’t favour you, all of these things can play into a final. It is how you deal with them and how you manage those situations.

“For me, it is full focus, full effort and at the end of it if you can do those two things then you can look yourself in the mirror afterwards and say I did all I could. They have a great opportunity, if they stick together, play well and work hard then they will get their rewards. If they don’t, it will be a challenge.

“It is an exciting game and you have to enjoy these moments, they are few and far between. There is a lot of pressure that comes with it but I said to the boys, pressure is a privilege.

“If you didn’t have pressure then you wouldn’t be playing any sport. It is good to have that pressure because you’ve got something that is expected of you and if something is expected of you, then you have a purpose. That is what we are after, making more meaningful moments for our club and this could be one.”

The Mos and their Essex rivals will also meet in the play-offs next weekend.

Lennon’s men have won their league encounters 8-3, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-5, losing once in the cup 6-5 but prior to that enjoying a 12-3 cup win away.

The coach hopes to have most of the players back who missed Sunday’s game against Streatham but experienced forward Tom Long - a former Chelmsford player - looks set to miss out with a back injury.

Lennon said: “He has been fantastic this year. We were hoping that he might be fit and ready for the final but I think it is going to come too soon, we’re not even sure he will play again this season.

“Hopefully he can be around the boys to cheer them on because he is such an influential character, someone we have definitely missed. I am gutted for him.

“He came out of retirement this year to play for us and Chelmsford is his home club. He is a fantastic hockey player but we will be doing it for him if we can.”
