It was a goal to remember on Saturday for young striker Elliott List.

His first senior goal earned the Gills a point at Bristol Rovers.

Boss Steve Lovell congratulated List at the final whistle, with a few words of advice.

List said: “The gaffer talked about that feeling, it’s the best feeling in the world. He just told me to keep going, keep doing it.

“I probably should have scored a few goals earlier, I have had missed chances, I have been unlucky, I just kept working at it and with Patto (assistant manager Mark Patterson). I have been working one versus one with him after training every day. It has paid off and it has been nice.

“Not only was it my first goal, it was an important goal. It was just elation, it was joy. It was in the last minute, we had been 1-0 down and all of those things added up, it really did feel nice.”

Describing his impact and his goal, he said: “I tried to run in behind, I tried to bring energy into the team, because we looked a bit flat and when they scored their goal heads dropped but we all got going again, saying ‘come on, we can do this’ and thankfully we nicked it late.

“I had my back to goal when I received it, I managed to turn one defender and then got past another, I tried to get a shot into the corner low and it went in thankfully, so that was nice.

“It was nice from a personal note to get my first goal, such an important one, but it has been a team effort through the whole season. We did well in the middle of the season, we haven’t done great recently but we got over the line and that is the main thing.”

The Gills would have been safe even had they lost on Saturday and staying up was the main thing for List.

“It is a massive relief and we can just chill now,” he said.

“We are at home and we want to show the fans what we are capable of, give them good encouragement for next season.

“This is just the start (for me). I need to keep working hard, keep doing what I am doing and hopefully the goals will come. The first one is always the important one and you just want to keep getting as many as you can.”
